I received a felony warrant notice in the mail…

Help! I received a notice in the mail that says I have a felony warrant out for my arrest. What should I do?

St. Louis County Felony Warrant

I just received one of these in the mail, I’m scared to death.  What should I do?

  1. Remain calm .  In St. Louis County and many other jurisdictions, this kind of notice is standard industry procedure. This may seem weird, but (outside of very serious, often violent offenses), this is how the state prosecuting attorney’s office lets you know that you have been accused of a crime.
  2. Take this notice seriously .  An arrest warrant allows the police to come to your house or job and arrest you on the spot. If you are stopped for a minor traffic violation (such as speeding or running a red light), an arrest warrant grants any law enforcement officer (regardless of their jurisdiction) the right to take you into custody.
  3. Contact an experienced criminal defense attorney .  This may seem obvious but you would be surprised how many people turn to their “family” lawyer or the “guy that did Julie’s divorce”. A divorce lawyer or the estates lawyer that drafted your grandfather’s will is not going to know much about “warrants”. Only criminal defense lawyers deal with warrants. A criminal defense lawyer will know how to: 1) Lower the bond set on your case and 2) Effectuate your surrender.

The help of an experienced criminal defense attorney won’t make an arrest warrant disappear, but he or she will make the process of dealing with it as painless as possible.
